MLS Releases Mobile App Updates
We gathered some opinions from the g4s writers on both the Android and iPhone versions…
I have the iPhone app and the very first thing I noticed about it was that it is much more attractive this year. Last season’s app had an industrial feel to it, but 2012 looks more like the actual MLS website. I’ve only played around with it a little bit, but it’s a slide app much like the iPhone updates and Android system. You can also set alerts per team which is cool. I don’t think you could do that last year. It also has a twitter timeline widget for each team that automatically pulls up all the tweets from the players on the team. It would be really cool if it brought up tweets with @replies to the team or the team’s hashtag so that you could keep up with what other people are tweeting during the game. I’m not sure if that’s a part of it, but if it is I will be very impressed. Another thing I thought was really cool is that you have the option to download chants. I am at work so I haven’t listened to any of them yet, but it’s still cool. Also, once you choose your club in the app it automatically sorts out the news, scores, and videos for just that team so you don’t have to scroll through and search for stuff. I know last season I used the app to keep up with MLS news stories and it was a giant pain to scroll through everything. The only thing that I dislike about the app is the way they’ve done the section for scores. I think that last season’s set up was more user friendly. This season it’s kind of all mashed together and feels awkward. Overall it’s a huge improvement and I really like the new app.
I have it! I like it so far. Takes a little to load like the last app but I like the aesthetics of it a lot more. Very sleek.
The new app is very slick and the way it operates is more inline with the feel of the rest of the Android OS. I like some of the new features, like a stadium listing and the listing of MLS pubs is great for traveling. The huge drawback in the Android version will always be the lack of live streaming video, but thankfully MLS has switched to Flash video, so videos on their site are viewable directly in the Android browser. I’m also going to miss the app Dooping at me when I open it.
