The Winner of Ally of the Year 2012 Is…

End of the Season Awards AlliesIt’s time to announce what is the most significant award of them all, whom you have chosen as 2012’s Ally of the Year in North American soccer.

This one is very tough for me. You sent in so many deserving nominees and if left to my own devices there would have been no way I could have picked a winner among them. They have marched for marriage equality, produced groundbreaking videos, and stood in line for hours to be photographed with duct tape on their mouths. And personally, there are people on this list whom I have come to know as friends. Thank you all so much for your support throughout the year.

The nominees are:

  • Brian Dunseth & Chris Wingert
  • Mike Chabala, Ben Olsen & Chris Pontius
  • The Chicago Fire
  • Jimmy Conrad
  • Mike Boxall, Jay DeMerit & Jordan Harvey
  • Kyle Martino
  • Amobi Okugo
  • AJ Soares
  • The Timbers Army
  • The You Can Play Project

But the winner of Ally of the Year 2012 Is…
The Timbers Army!

The Timbers Army was one of the first Supporters Groups to become allies with gay4soccer way back when we first started our allies list in January.

Their supporters section gay pride flags have been some of the most prominent in Major League Soccer and a frequently viewable presence on national television broadcasts.

Ally of the Year

The Timbers Army has also been very proactive in working to eliminate homophobic language from the stands, calling out and dealing with it when it is heard around them.

Thank you for being allies and for all your support, Timbers Army! We are proud to present you with this suitable-for-framing certificate.
