FIFA Allowing Game Stoppages for Fan Behavior
With two Confederations Cup participants racking up the fines for homophobic chants from fans, FIFA is allowing referees to stop matches for fan behavior.
Many eyes are on Mexico and Chile as FIFA President Gianni Infantino explained, “Both initiatives are extra tools for the referees and match officials to prevent discriminatory attitudes and ensure that the atmosphere in the stadium is one of fair play and respect.”
Secretary General Fatma Samoura has also said there will be pre-game announcements in all Confederations Cup stadiums in hopes that past sanctions and education do the job before the step of game stoppages and potential forfeit is needed.
Beyond homophobia from visitors from CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, many are also worried about fans in the host nation of Russia who have shown noteworthy displays of racism in the past.
