Seattle Teams Gearing Up for Pride
The Seattle Sounders and Seattle Reign are getting ready to join in the city’s Pride festivities, both inside and outside of their stadiums.
Ten percent of Reign ticket sales, a portion of special Sounders ticket sales, and auctioned items from both teams will support LGBT youth scholarships granted by the Greater Seattle Business Association.
Owners of both teams spoke about the importance of pride to their organizations. “With the unique place that sport has in our culture, it’s incredibly important that teams take advantage of their platforms in order to make a difference,” said Sounders FC Owner Adrian Hanauer. “The Seattle community has long been dedicated to supporting inclusiveness and advancing rights for all citizens, and the Sounders are thrilled to come together with our fellow professional teams to highlight our commitment to those ideals.”
As the Reign announced their plans, owner Bill Predmore shared, “We are proud to be part of a Seattle sports community that is so visibly and vocally committed to fostering inclusion, respecting diversity and working towards equality for all.”
As the Sounders celebrate Pride Night, The Voice alumna Vicci Martinez will kick off a March to the Match full of giveaways. The stadium itself will be filled with rainbow scarfs and armbands, both on the field and in the stands.
The Reign’s Pride Night Saturday will feature a flag giveaway and limited edition pride shirts for sale.
The week wraps up with the Sounders being one of the grand marshals in Sunday’s Seattle Pride Parade.
The Sounders have also made Pride a focus in their Sounders Monthly publication, with local radio host Jason Rantz writing about why his team supporting the LGBT community is important to him.
