United Soccer Coaches Announce Play With Pride Week
United Soccer Coaches have announced the launch of a new LGBT-supportive initiative. It includes their first Play With Pride Week from September 18-24.
The group was the National Soccer Coaches Association of America until they rebranded earlier this month. It is the world’s largest association of soccer coaches with over 30,000 members.
Member coaches at the high school and collegiate level can request rainbow laces to show support for their LGBT athletes throughout the week. Participants will also receive materials to help promote the cause.
Out author Dan Woog (School’s Out: The Impact of Gay and Lesbian Issues on America’s Schools) is chair of United Soccer Coaches’ LGBT Coaches and Allies Member Group. He talked about the importance of Play With Pride: “Soccer is an amazingly diverse sport. That diversity includes gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender coaches, players, support staff, referees and fans. This is a simple, effective and very colorful way to send the message that every person, associated with every team, is valued and respected.”
We’re looking forward to seeing all of the support from United Soccer Coaches across the country next month.
