Mexico to Donate to Schools for Positive Chants
As Mexico gears up for the penultimate weekend of World Cup Qualifying, its Federation has a new plan to combat homophobic language in chants from fans.
If fans chant “Mexico” on opposing goal kicks, they have pledged to pledge to donate the amount they would have been fined by FIFA to Mexican schools. The plan mirrors one announced by Tigres prior to the start of the Liga MX season.
Over the course of the qualifying process for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Mexico’s soccer federation has racked up over 100,000 Swiss Francs in fines for homophobic chants from their fans.
